What is a QMHP?

A Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) is a state-registered role in Virginia authorized to provide mental health support services under supervision. Virginia recognizes three QMHP tracks administered through the Board of Counseling:

  • QMHP-Trainee (QMHP-T): Entry-level registration for individuals gaining supervised experience toward full QMHP status.
  • QMHP-Child (QMHP-C): Authorized to provide services to children and adolescents.
  • QMHP-Adult (QMHP-A): Authorized to provide services to adults.

QMHP Certification Requirements in Virginia

Education

A bachelor's or master's degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related human-services field is typically required for full QMHP-A or QMHP-C status. QMHP-T applicants who have not yet met the full experience requirement can register while completing supervised hours.

Supervised Experience

Virginia requires documented supervised experience providing mental health services to the relevant population (child or adult). Hour requirements vary by degree level — verify the current threshold with the Board of Counseling.

Application & Background

Submit the official QMHP registration application, official transcripts, verification of supervised experience, and complete a criminal background check as required by the Department of Health Professions.

Supervision Plan

QMHP-T applicants must identify a qualified clinical supervisor and submit a supervision plan documenting the scope and structure of supervised practice.
