Interviews
Clinical interviews are the foundation of every substance abuse evaluation and give our clinicians a clear picture of the individual's substance use history, current patterns, and the impact use is having on daily life. With consent, we may also speak with family members, partners, or other people close to the client to gather a more complete and accurate perspective. These conversations are conducted in a non-judgmental, confidential environment so individuals feel safe sharing the information needed to build appropriate recommendations.

Medical History
We carefully review available medical records, prescription history, and any prior mental health or substance use treatment documentation. This step helps identify co-occurring physical or psychiatric conditions, medication interactions, and patterns that may be contributing to substance use. A thorough medical history ensures that recommendations are clinically sound and account for the whole person — not just the substance use itself.
Drug Testing
When clinically indicated or required by a referring party such as a court or employer, the evaluation may include a drug screening to objectively confirm recent substance use. Testing is conducted with privacy and dignity, and results are interpreted in context with the rest of the assessment rather than in isolation. This information helps clarify the type, frequency, and severity of use so the clinician can recommend the most appropriate level of care.
Psychological Testing
Standardized psychological assessments and, when needed, a psychiatric evaluation may be incorporated to identify co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or mood disorders. Many people who struggle with substance use also experience underlying mental health concerns, and treating both together leads to better outcomes. The information gathered helps shape an integrated treatment plan that addresses substance use and mental health in tandem.
Behavioral Assessments
Behavioral assessments examine how substance use is affecting relationships, work or school performance, legal involvement, and daily functioning. Clinicians look at triggers, coping strategies, risk behaviors, and patterns that maintain the cycle of use. The findings help inform treatment recommendations such as outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient programs, residential care, or community-based supports — matched to the individual's actual needs.
